On the road again! … Finally…!

On the road again…

Today is the 10th October 2015 which means we’ve been away from the UK for 18 MONTHS!!
I will apologise now for the lack of posts for a while (Ok, for ages!) but we’ve been busy in the flow of “normal” life! We are working on it and will try and get a few more posts done to get up to date over the next few weeks.
Here we are, back on the road after our ‘half-way work stop’ in Sydney. We both managed to find work in Sydney without too much hassle, and settled in easily to the city life. I’ll be honest, I will really miss it, I made some good friends and really enjoyed the life we had in the city but the adventure must continue, and I know Sydney’s not going anywhere so instead of being sad to leave, I can look forward to returning at some point in the future.
We left Sydney on the Indian Pacific and had a lovely week in Adelaide, before hopping on The Ghan to Alice Springs, hired a car from there* to drive to Uluru before returning to Alice and jumping back on The Ghan to head north to Darwin to pick up our camper and travel down the west coast.
We’re looking forward to the second part of our adventure without the visa restrictions we had for the first part. We’ll be travelling a lot more freely this time and just booking flights as and when we need them to avoid cutting any bits short. Having said that, we have planned/booked up until around next March in a vague sort of way….after the west coast, we’ll be heading back to Sydney for a quick overnight stop and then flying off to Auckland, New Zealand! We have hired a camper van for our time there, we booked it for the whole time, meaning one van for both the North and South Islands, this way we don’t restrict ourselves with a time to have to be at the border (as camper vans have to be booked in advance). After that, we’re heading to Taiwan where we’ll spend Christmas and new year before going back to the Land of the Rising sun…JAPAN :)  :)  :)  for February with the highlight being the Sapporo snow festival, I cannot wait! Although I have never skied before so I’m a bit apprehensive but we’re fully insured so it’s all ok!
*By the way…car hire can be very expensive but I managed to find a company based in the UK that do bookings for most of the world rentalcars.com, with a 24hr customer service that offers MUCH cheaper rates and the insurance options that you have in the UK (equivalent of 3rd party cover as standard and only ¬£40 for the whole 5 days of rental to upgrade to no excess, full insurance unlike the ~$30 a day in Australia, on a small car) and unlimited mileage (kms) which definitely does not come as standard in Central Australia – most companies in Australia, including the big names only offer 300km-400km per day maximum and considering it’s about 460km just to get from Alice Springs to Uluru, it just isn’t enough so then you have to pay a premium for unlimited km of around $50 extra per day.
